Welcome to Summer: Tour De Fat, Kirby Derby, and NC Fresh Catch!

This weekend is the first weekend of summer and there’s plenty of ways to celebrate – from the New Belgium Tour De Fat to the 13th annual Kirby Derby to the NC Fresh Catch Festival, these are just a few ways to enjoy yourself this weekend.

Including bikes, beer, and bemusement, the Tour De Fat is a rotating fun festival “best described by being here”. Featuring beers by New Belgium, a bike parade, bike contests, and even vaudeville acts, the day-long festival is free but proceeds from beer sales will go to local non-profits. You can also pre-register online if you want to participate in the parade and get fun swag. The event is at Diamond View Park on Saturday, June 21, and starts at 10am, with a schedule of bands and other shenanigans online.

Along similar lines as the TDF, Kirby Derby is a throw-back neighborhood festival featuring such amusement as pinecars, a parade, “drag” racing, and a soapbox derby. Now in its 13th year and having outgrown its neighborhood long ago, the derby will have a couple of food trucks but is BYOB and reading the parking information online is highly suggested! Always a fun way to enjoy the evening – things kick off on Saturday, June 21, at 4pm – the event is a great way to see the crafty inventiveness in the city and is free to attend.
